Welcome back, and welcome to the first Monthly Math Memo of the
academic year! For those new to the department, the MMM is the Harvard
Math's undergraduate newsletter. This year, the MMM will be composed by the Undergraduate
Events team, and we will use
it to let you know about upcoming talks, events, and opportunities, and
include some fun tidbits along the way.
Math table and
Open Neighborhood seminar.
The schedule and structure of these two events is changing for this semester.
The events will be held on alternating Wednesdays; see the Undergrad Events
calendar for the schedule. This
year, Open Neighborhood (4:30pm, SC 507) features talks by faculty and
graduate students geared toward undergraduates, and Math Table (6pm, SC
507) features undergraduate speakers. Both talks have food provided (Math
Table has dinner before the talk and Open Neighborhood had refreshments
after). The first Open Neighborhood talk will be given by Joe Harris
on Wednesday, Sep 11. If you are interested in giving a Math Table talk, email
Stepan Paul (spaul@math.harvard.edu).
"Why Do Math?" is the
department's invited speaker series for a general audience. On Wednesday,
Sep 25 at 5:30pm, Francis Su of Harvey Mudd College, former
president of the MAA, will give a talk in SC Hall D entitled "Mathematics
for Human Flourishing", and an Open Neighborhood talk on Thursday, Sep 26*
at 5:30pm on "Sperner's lemma: topological combinatorics solving
social science problem*" (note the special day and time). Francis has
written about issue of
diversity and inclusion in mathematics, the
value of grace and humility in teaching, and shares anything and everything
mathematical on his twitter page.
Tutorials
These are grad student led reading courses for undergraduates. The two this
semester are Etale Cohomology (led by Yifei Zhao) and Morse Theory (led by
